Smartpants SP3200: The World’s Largest Digital Picture Frame

Smartpants SP3200 Digital Picture Frame: Review

If you’ve been itching to get a digital picture frame but haven’t found anything that’s big enough for you, then feast your eyes on the Smartparts SP3200 and its staggering 32 inches of LCD glory. It’s certainly difficult to find adequate adjectives to describe this titanic digital picture frame, but it is possible to succinctly sum up its feature set as the offspring of a union between a fairly run-of-the-mill digital picture frame and a big screen television.

Photobucket

When the bright boffins over at Smartparts were supersizing the digital picture frame as we know it, they also decided to throw in a few extra MB of memory. It’s not like space constraints are going to be a major factor with a behemoth like the Smartparts SP3200. The result is an above average 256MB of onboard memory that users can store anything from pictures to sounds and even videos. Supported video formats include MPEG1, 2 and 4 as well as WMA and AVI files. All this video support might have you hankering for a remote control, and Smartparts doesn’t disappoint. How many people can control their digital picture frames over 30 metres, much less watch videos on them?

Like most digital picture frames the Smartparts SP3200 packs a plethora of ports which virtually guarantees compatibility with whatever memory standards your other digital devices use. Supported standards include Memory Stick (MS), Memory Stick Duo (MS Duo), Memory Stick Pro (MS Pro), Memory Stick PRo Duo (MS Pro Duo), Secure Digital (SD), and Compact Flash (CF).

Like most digital picture frames, the Smartparts SP3200 comes with a slideshow function and various settings to personalise your display. Also included but not mandatory is the Optipix Pro software which has an intuitive walk-through based user interface that makes sure your pictures are looking their best before you display them for the world to see.

All of this talk of about videos and pictures brings us to (pardon the pun) big question: how does it look? To be completely honest the 16:9 ratio widescreen LCD panel with its 1366×768 resolution isn’t nearly as sharp or crisp as smaller screens that pack more pixels per square centimetre. Still, the image isn’t distorted or blurry, but it will never be mistaken for an actual photo except perhaps at great distance. Perhaps the the Smartparts SP3200 digital picture frame had to make some sacrifice in order to be available at a price point that wouldn’t induce heart attack levels of sticker shock.

As things stand the projected sticker price for the Smartparts SP3200 digital picture frame is approximately £550, which wouldn’t be so bad if it could pull double duty as a HDTV set, or even a place to plug in your game consoles.

Kodak Unveils Worlds First OLED Wireless Digital Photo Frame

The Kodak OLED Digital Photo Frame

PhotobucketWhile it’s certainly thin enough that you might consider slicing bread with it, there are probably better uses for Kodak’s brand new digital photo frame featuring the innovative Kodak OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology.

If you’re wondering what Kodak OLED technology does it can be summed up in 3 words: thin, saturation and colour. The new technology allows greater colour depth, and saturation from any angle compared to pre-existing LCD technologies. To top things off the Kodak OLED technology is remarkably thin, so thin in fact that it isn’t much thicker than a coin. Will the day come when digital photo frames are the depth of actual photos? Who knows, but it’s certainly a question worth asking after seeing a Kodak OLED digital photo frame.

Enough about the Kodak OLED, let’s get right into the specs. The 7.6” diagonal screen packs in a whopping 384,000 pixels in a 800 x 480 array. Pair that with the enhanced colour depth and saturation of the Kodak OLED display and the result is extremely realistic pictures. Like many newer digital photo frames the new Kodak OLED can even play video, but with only 7.6” of screen space it may not be something you want to watch a football match on.

Simply having unparalleled picture quality even at extreme viewing angles is certainly noteworthy, but the list of innovations doesn’t stop there. Kodak has stuffed a whopping 2GB of storage into this petite marvel as well as Wi-Fi capability to augment the normal array of supported memory stick standards. The Wi-Fi comes in very handy for users with a PC as you can not only upload media to your Kodak OLED, but you can use the Kodak EASYSHARE Digital Display Software suite to edit and organise your pictures. It’s a great way to make sure guests don’t torque their neck while trying to view photos you shot in landscape.

Rounding out the package is a fairly par for the course set of functions to include the ubiquitous slide show and music playing functionality. Considering the innovative Kodak OLED display, breathtaking photo crispness, the outrageously thin exterior, massive storage, video playback capability, and the nifty Wi-Fi connectivity, the typical slide show seems like something of an anachronism, but considering that the point of having a digital photo frame is showing off photos you just can’t complain about it as it certainly does its job.

Remember, if the Kodak OLED digital photo frame’s remarkable image quality and thin size fail to impress, you can always use it to slice bread. How many other digital photo frames can make that claim?

The Kodak OLED digital photo frame is not cheap at around £600! So if that price doesn’t but you off, you should be able to pick one up from Kodak’s website before Christmas.

Digital Picture Frames – What Display Features Do They Offer?

Digital picture frames offer many advanced features for displaying images, photographs and videos; including using built-in speakers to turn the frames into truly multimedia entertainment devices. The digital picture frames market is inundated with options depending on storage size, wireless features and display options. A wise consumer makes their decisions based on the functions that their digital picture frame will serve.

Digital picture frames display options begin with screen size, quality and colour. Photograph aficionados recommend digital picture frames with the largest screen size you can afford. Different customers will prioritise different criteria for viewing screen quality.

Most digital picture frames have screen sizes ranging from 5.6 to 15 inches (14.2 to 38.1 centimetres). The difference between the size of the viewing screen and the total dimensions are based on manufacturer specifications.

Finding a quality high screen resolution, nonreflective Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) or Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Display screen is also important. Some digital picture frames will have better viewing angles than others.

Colour spectrums for the display screen (ranging from 256,000 to millions of shades) are another factor in selecting digital picture frames. What colour format are most of your photographs in? How essential is it to be able to adjust the colour tints, contrast ratio and brightness on the digital picture frame? Not all digital picture frames have adjustment controls.

Digital picture frames are sold with leather, metal or plastic cases. There are many colours for the digital picture frame cases including white, silver, red and black. Some digital picture frames have internal clocks, turning the frames on or off at a designated time.

Some digital picture frames have fancy features like rotating screens. Others have the thumbnail, multiple pictures on a screen, slide show and video display. The “slide show” technology is good for business presentations and family gatherings.

Some digital picture frames notify customers when new photographs arrive. Photographers might choose a digital picture frame based on the image (BMP, EXIF, GIF, JPEG and PNG), video (MOV, AVI, MPEG 1 and 4) and audio (MP3) formats supported.

Photograph management is important when displaying pictures across mobile phone, e-mail, computer and internet formats. Different digital picture frames handle pictures acquired from these devices better. Some will adjust pictures by “cropping” them, losing content.

Digital picture frames can be very versatile and easy-to-use. More experienced users will look for digital picture frames with additional ports for headphones, S-video jacks for video displays and movie maker features.

RSS feeds provide “live streaming” internet content - stock tickers, weather and news - with moving graphics that allow for digital picture frames being used as business signs. If the consumer wants to use their frame for this purpose, they should maximise the display options to make it best suited as a commercial application.

The consumer should first contemplate how they want to use the digital picture frame - then they can tailor their search based on those criteria. There are many wonderful digital picture frames display options available.

Digital Picture Frame Size – Does It Matter?

Category: Digital Picture Frames
Date published: September 12th, 2008

What size of digital picture frame should you buy?

Digital picture frames have become popular items and are manufactured by dozens of companies. A digital picture frame can range in size from 1inch to 17 inches. The size a person needs depends greatly on the desired location of their digital picture frame. Most digital picture frames less than 2” are reserved for key chains and other novelty items and not something you would want to display on your desk or table for example.

A person looking to add a digital picture frame to their work or home office should consider a 5 to 6 inch frame for their desk as anything larger might be distracting for clients or business associates. If your digital picture frame is going to be in a large living space such as living room or family room a person should think about frames 7 inches and over. The reason for this is that you want people to be able to see your pictures without straining their eyes. For really big rooms a person may what to consider a 10 inch or larger digital picture frame. When choosing your digital picture frame there are some technical points that you should check out prior to purchase.

Some of the technical information to consider when purchasing you digital photo frame are: number screen resolution, brightness, contrast, aspect ratio and extra functionality. All of these factors are important to consider prior to buying your digital picture frame.

The number of pixels determines how vivid your pictures will look when they are displayed - the more pixels the LCD has the better the picture will be. Pixels range from 320×240 680×460 800×600 and 1024×768. When buying a digital picture frame 7 inches or larger you may want to have 800×600 resolution. The larger the screen the more pixels you should consider having for better picture results.

Brightness and contrast controls are important to consider when buying a digital picture frame. Even if you know where you are going to put your digital picture frame there will be days the room is brighter and darker because of natural light. As this happens you will need to adjust both brightness and contrast in order to show your pictures in the best light. The Brightness and contrast controls need to be finer the larger the screen is.

Most consumer digital cameras have an aspect ratio 4:3. Therefore when looking at a digital picture frame you should probably look for the same aspect ratio because this makes photo editing much easier to do. For some cameras you may not even have to edit prior to placing your photos on the digital picture frames because the aspect ratios are the same.

Before buying a digital picture frame you may want to take some notes on where you are going to place the frame. Some things to consider are how large is the room and how natural and artificial lighting will affect your digital picture frame. Are you placing it on a desk in a study or office, or in a larger room where people meet to mingle? These are some of the questions you should ask yourself before buy a digital picture frame.

Digital Photo Frames & Wireless Capability

Category: Digital Photo Frames
Date published: September 4th, 2008

Digital Photo Frames Utilise Wireless Technology

Wireless capabilities and technology have revolutionised options for viewing images, photographs and videos - especially when linked to digital photo frames. Digital photo frames have been turned into internet accessible devices with wireless advances. The ability to send pictures wirelessly - from digital photo frames - to phones, e-mail and the internet is a technology with many powerful potential applications.

Wireless digital photo frames allow for easy access to internet photo libraries anywhere and at anytime. Linking to popular photograph websites, such as Flickr.com, affords convenient photo sharing with family and friends. As coffee shops and cities add Wi-Fi, wireless digital photo frames offer a great portable image display option. Many digital photo frames have built-in stereo speakers, allowing for multimedia intermixing with video and audio.

The Bluetooth short range wireless connection technology has allowed for digital photo frames to link up to phones, computers and the internet. Bluetooth’s website proudly proclaims it made its “first picture frame” wireless in 2006. The Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable allows connection to laptops and personal computers (PCs).

Wireless digital photo frames allow for better photograph management by utilising the strengths of different mobile devices and the internet to alter and display pictures. Different digital photo frames might be linked to different websites. Wireless digital photo frame software allows for images to be altered on-screen; conversion to thumbnail views allows for a more compact viewing format.

RSS feeds are used to summarise frequently-updated web content, such as, blogs, stock tickers and weather updates. These “web feeds” provide “real-time” information and analysis. This “live streaming” internet content -news, entertainment and sports updates with moving graphics - could even be used for commercial applications – such as using digital photo frames as business signs.

There are many different options for wireless capability depending on the consumer’s preferences. Some digital photo frames offer easier compatibility with the internet [Internet Protocol (IP) addresses or the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) - which includes any independent identifiable unit, such as files or documents]. Some digital photo frames even act as portals to websites.

Certain digital photo frames will deal better with different operating systems (Windows XP or OS). Other digital photo frames might handle live chat rooms more effectively. Some units have unique email addresses, which can receive messages from phones. Certain digital photo frames will have better display screen options for pictures sent from other wireless devices. Remote controls make the devices even more hands-off.

Photography experts might choose a wireless digital photo frame based on the image (JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF and EXIF), video (MOV, AVI, MPEG 1 and 4) and audio (MP3) formats supported. Security concerns can be addressed with digital picture frames with encryption technology. Different digital photo frames will offer varying storage sizes.

Some experts recommend photo digital frames with upgradable technology, member networks and no subscription fees. Others suggest getting digital photo frames with as big a screen as you can afford.

Wireless digital photo frames are an incredible technology, which make pictures truly mobile.
